A Health Insurance Agent (also often referred to as Health Insurance Broker) is a trained and licensed professional who can help you enroll in a health insurance plan.
If the agent/broker works in the employee benefits arena,
An agent/broker may represent only one insurance company or several companies.
Using an agent or broker does not usually cost you anything. The sales commission paid to the agent/broker is built into the premium for the plans offered for sale. In some situations, a benefits consultant may offer services for a fee. If you employ an agent/broker to help you in your search for health insurance, ask whether he/she/they work on a commission-only compensation plan or another arrangement.
If your agent or broker works with the federal Health Insurance Marketplace (also known as the federal exchange), or one of the state exchanges operating across the country, additional training and certification may be required.
