MEC refers to the minimum level of coverage that satisfies the requirements of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). It is sometimes referred to “qualifying health coverage” under the ACA.
MEC plans provide a minimum level of health care benefits and excluded certain “excepted benefits” like standalone dental plans, vision plans, or Workers’ Compensation coverage.
Coverage satisfying MEC requirements include ACA Marketplace plans; most job-based health plans; Medicare; Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California), coverage under the Children’s Health Insurance Plan (CHIP), and most TRICARE plans (offered to current and former military members and dependents).
