Surprise Bill

The No Surprises Act is a federal law that provides protection from surprise (unexpected) medical bills. It became effective January 1, 2022. It prohibits surprise billing for emergency services, even out-of-network, and also covers certain out-of-network care at in-network facilities and out-of-network air ambulance services. For those without insurance, it provides the right to a “good faith estimate” (GFE) of expected costs.
